Natural Sunburn Treatment
Ah, summer is almost here and I cannot wait to hit the road to the beach and relax with a smoothie and a good book in my hands!
But as we know proper preparation for the sunbathing season is a must to preserve our healthy skin and young appearance! (You can check out two of my favorite natural non-toxic sunscreen recipes in the following link: Get Ready for Summer with These Organic Non-toxic Sunscreens).
But sometimes things get out of hand – we may fall asleep under the sun, splash in the sea for too long, or just walk outside in the summer without sun block. And what happens next is very unpleasant, painful, and uncomfortable – skin redness, irritation, itching, even fever, and nausea! (Sunburn is no joke!) 🙁
So, today I have prepared for you one simple but very effective natural recipe that will help you heal the sunburn, and fight the skin irritation without harming your body with chemicals and toxins! Let’s unleash the healing power of Mother Nature!
Natural Sunburn Treatment
3 tsps. St. John’s wort infused oil
3 tsps. Calendula infused oil
6 drops Lavender essential oil
Mix the ingredients and place them in a glass jar.
Apply on the skin, especially on the irritated areas.
Note: If you do not have any herbal infused oils, you can prepare them at home. Follow the guidelines below:
Herbal infused oil – The Slow Method
Take a glass jar with a screw lid and fill about half of it (or more) with dry Calendula or St.John’s wort blossoms. Pour extra virgin olive oil (or another type of cold pressed oil) to fully submerge the herb. Stir well and put the lid on.
Important – the blossoms need to be fully covered with oil or they will spoil and get moldy.
Place the jar in a sunny room and open it every other day to check if there are any unpleasant smells. In about 9 weeks strain the mixture through cheesecloth and the herbal infused oil is ready!
Herbal infused oil – The Fast Method
Take the desired oil and place it in a double boiler. Put it on the stove on very low heat – the water in the double boiler must not be boiling. Put fresh clean Calendula or St.John’s wort blossoms in the oil and stir. It will take a couple of hours for the oil to be fully infused. Next, take the oil off the heat, wait for it to cool off and strain with cheesecloth.
Now you have all the ingredients for your natural sunburn treatment recipe!
Important Note: Do not use this oil blend before sun exposure, St. John’s wort oil can increase the photosensitivity of the skin!
