Homemade Fire Cider Recipe (ACV Cold Remedy)
Winter is approaching and building our immune system is becoming a priority. Because I strongly believe in prevention – prevention through food, natural supplements, and remedies. It is better to work on fortifying our natural defense mechanisms, instead of having to take countless pharmaceuticals. Well, I am not against traditional medicine (it is indispensable), but if I could even lower my chances of getting a cold or the flu, I would totally be up for every home remedy available!
And here comes one of these wonderful apple cider home remedies for the cold months ahead – the fire cider, a.k.a. the Dragon cider (well, because you will be breathing fire)!
What is fire cider?
A fire cider is a magnificent cider tonic immunity booster made of natural apple cider vinegar and various potent herbs and veggies with acute anti-vital, anti-fungal, and anti-septic properties, such as garlic, onions, horse radish, ginger, cinnamon, Cayenne pepper, etc.
The combination of these powerful ingredients is a concoction which will help you build your natural immunity, detox, vitalize your body, fight the flu and other viruses, bacteria, or fungi!
What is fire cider good for?
I will let you in on a little secret – the fire cider benefits are numerous, but this is not the only thing you can use it for! J
Beside from the obvious immune-boosting and flu-fighting abilities, you can use this ACV infusion as a salad dressing or a condiment for any traditional recipe which requires vinegar! Yes, all the ingredients in this homemade remedy are completely edible and if you enjoy spicy food, this is just the thing you need!
The fire cider can also be used topically to treat various skin ailments, but be extremely careful – pure ACV is very potent and it could burn the skin if left for too long! It is best to dilute the infusion with some pure water! I use charcoal filtered water to remove the limescale or any possible contamination.
How to make fire cider (a.k.a. Dragon breath cider)?
The procedure to make this apple cider remedy for colds is very easy and straightforward. The only downside to it is that it takes time to prepare all the veggies and to let the infusion sit for a couple of weeks. So, if you intend to start prepping for winter, now is the best time to start making your fire cider!
Logically, you will need pure high quality ACV, but note that it does not have to be apple cider. In my case, I used aronia berry vinegar which is also extremely potent and packed with nutrients and health benefits. Sadly, it is not that popular in comparison to the good ol’ ACV.
You will also need high quality honey for its amazing nutritional values and some grated turmeric root. To be completely honest, here in my country, turmeric root is almost impossible to find, so I used powdered turmeric instead. The other ingredients are pretty easy to find and I hope it should not be a problem adding them. If by any chance you cannot have something at your disposal, no worries – just skip it – it will still be your very own fire cider!

How much fire cider should I drink?
“How much fire cider per day?” is a common question people ask and it is extremely important one!
This natural remedy is quite potent and definitely not suitable for everyone! The spicy ingredients and the strong ACV can be counter-indicated for people with various gastro-intestinal issues, such as gastritis, ulcers, IBS, hemorrhoids (people with hemorrhoids must avoid spicy food!), etc. Always consult with your doctor before adding new natural remedies or supplements to your diet plan!
But for the common folks I would say between 1 tsp. and 1 tablespoon a day for prevention. Start small, asses your body’s reaction to the remedy and adjust accordingly. If it feels too strong, you can also dilute it with some water or tea.
In case of a cold, you can triple the dosage after you consult with our doctor!
How long will fire cider keep?
Can fire cider go bad? I think it can, but not very easily if we store it properly. Pure apple cider vinegar has powerful conserving properties since it is famous for its bacteria-fighting abilities! One fresh batch of fire cider should be good for at least the whole winter. Next year, just make another one. The fresher the cider – the more benefits it will have.
Just remember to store it in an air tight non-metal container in a dark and cool place away from children (at the top shelf of the fridge is best)!
